Emma is undertaking an internship with the charity Global Poverty Project UK – which aims to end extreme poverty around the globe - and also outlined her career decisions from finishing GCSE’s to her present work. These included graduating from University, working and teaching all over the world with one of her last placements in a school in Bogotá, Columbia. She explained how her experiences abroad have changed the way she now views the world in terms of poverty and helped her realise how lucky the people of Britain are. To this end Emma is now a dedicated fundraiser for charities.

Part of the 10th Day was examining the work that the Red Cross does in the UK and overseas. They then had to come up with their own ideas on how to raise money for the Red Cross and presenttheir ideas to the rest of the group.

There was a varied range of fundraising ideas from a Fairy tale cake sale, car washing, Where’s Wally puzzles and a fashion Show.

Mandy Piggott, who arranged Emma’s visit and led the day’s workshop, said it was a very inspiring event for the students – who were amazed at Emma’s achievements since leaving Dartmouth in 2001.

“Emma showed them how much you can achieve,” she said. “She was a fantastic, positive role model for them and they were very inspired for the whole day. This project, which will run throughout the year, gives them so many opportunities to learn new skills, build their confidence and enhance their CVs. I’m really looking forward to what these students do for the Red Cross during the year.”

Head of Sixth Form, Nick Bowles, said: “This was a brilliant day for our Sixth Form. Not only were they working towards a big project which will enhance their skills and their CVs – they were also inspired by a brilliant ex-student. We are delighted Emma came in and wouldlike to thank her for giving her time.”
