Paul Sheward, Stop Smoking Service Lead at Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust, said: "Stoptober is the first ever mass quit attempt of its kind and for those people who have been thinking about quitting for a while it is the perfect opportunity to kick the habit for good.

"Giving up smoking is never easy and that is why we have put on some extra support clinics for local people.

"The clinics are an opportunity to get further information, advice and support about any aspect of giving up smoking.

"The evidence suggests that if you can stop smoking for 28 days you are five times more likely to stay smoke free."

Stoptober 2012 kicked off on Monday and runs for 28 days.

Debbie Stark, director of public health for Torbay, said: "Smoking remains the single biggest cause of preventable ill health and contributes to a high number of premature deaths each year.

"Giving up smoking on your own can be difficult and I really hope groups of friends and family will use this campaign to support each other to give up, as well as remembering that the local Stop Smoking Service is on hand to support people in quitting.

"With Christmas just round the corner, the average smoker could save around £150 to £200 a month by giving up the cigarettes; a fantastic bonus on top of the many health benefits that quitting brings."

You can also find information and Stoptober preparation packs in your GP surgery, local pharmacy or the Torbay Stop Smoking Service.

They are supporting the brand new stop smoking campaign in a bid to get people to quit.

The new campaign includes a preparation pack, 28-day Quit Calendar and Health and Wealth wheel.

Smokers who sign up will also receive support and encouragement through a daily messaging service, inspiration from celebrity mentors, and expert advice via a Stoptober app on smartphones, motivational text messages, Facebook page.

You can call into the Stop Smoking Service on Union Street, Torquay or contact the service on 01803 299160.
