FIGURES showing that unemployment in Devon is lower than same time last year have been welcomed.

Jobless figures show the number of people claiming JobSeekers' Allowance fell from 9,409 in August last year to 9,273 last month.

This follows the trend seen nationally, although the decrease in Devon compares favourably against the annual fall of 0.4 per cent across the UK.

Youth unemployment fell slightly from 2,760 in July to 2,745 in August, a 0.5 per cent monthly decrease, which follows the national trend although the reduction in Devon has occurred at a faster rate.

Devon county councillor Will Mumford, the Cabinet member for economy, enterprise and employment, said: "Given that the impact of seasonal employment opportunities will now start to slow at the end of the summer season, these latest figures aren't unexpected, and it follows the usual trend at this time of year.

"The availability of temporary seasonal job opportunities, which are often more accessible for younger people, will no doubt have contributed to the fall in youth unemployment in recent months.

"While it's pleasing to see that youth unemployment in Devon is falling at a faster rate than nationally, it's still an area that we need to focus on to give greater impetus to apprenticeship uptake and getting young people into the county's workforce.

"What we can take most encouragement from is the fact that the figures are lower than this time last year, especially at a time when the national picture lacks momentum.

"More recent national indicators do suggest slight signs of improvement which gives some hope that the national economy could pull itself out of recession in quarter three.

"That would certainly provide greater confidence for local businesses."

“The figure may be down in Devon for youths claiming Jobseekers allowance but in most of the drug den towns it's up for youths on incapacity benefit for being drug addicts and/or alcoholics. They have just been moved to a different list.”
