IT MAY be the home of Fawlty Towers and the Grosvenor, but Torquay still has some of the country's best places to stay.

The resort is the setting for Basil Fawlty’s chaotic hotel in the classic TV comedy and the actual home of Mark Jenkins' madcap Grosvenor from the more recent Channel 4 series The Hotel.

But it still came fifth in a UK league table for best service in hotels.

It scored 8.21 points out of 10 to put it only a little behind the 8.46 achieved by Sheffield at the top of the list compiled from thousands of reviews by the hotel.info company.

Second, on 8.39, was Norwich, with Leeds third, on 8.29, and York fourth, with 8.24. London trailed in at joint-22nd position, with 7.36 points.

Compared with European hotels, the UK fared poorly, failing to make it into the top 20.

This list was headed by Finland and Germany.

A hotel.info spokesman said: 'From rats in the restaurant to cream being poured over a guest’s head, Fawlty Towers gave Torquay a less-than-positive image, as far as hotel stays go.

'However, nearly 40 years have passed since then and our latest service quality survey has revealed that the British seaside favourite actually makes it into fifth position for service levels nationally.'

“As a recent arrival from South Africa - I can only add that I'm grateful for the peace, the calm, the convenience and the safety of life in Torquay. The only low point seems to be the constant complaints from so many of those who are privileged to live here. Its not all about governements and councils - citizens have responsibilities too!”

“Torquay has been on a downward slide for the last 30 years. I see no sign that anyone is willing to invest here. Money is moving out of Torbay, not moving in.”

“Private finance won't come to Torquay unless it see's the council supporting tourism in the area. Drug addicted criminals will come to Torquay, they get the support.”

“MisterDonut, did I mention the council you donut, I was on about private finance /investment. If the large mutinational companies want to invest in Torbay they will. As for your obsesion with castle circus, the hotel I focus on will be miles from there.Every town has it's problem areas Torquay is no different.”

“Look at the state of the centre of Torquay, Torquay won't get a five star hotel because with the council priorities being rehab for addicts, those with any money and any sense will go elsewhere. Would you wander around castle circus with a full wallet.”

“Yes some of the Hotels in Torquay are good, well run etc. What I think is missing at the moment is a "Flagship" 5 star Hotel that wouls cater for th esort of people that could affordthat type of place. Torbay will soon (South Devon Link Road) be one of the most accesssable British resorts on the South Coast to get to and needs a Premier Hotel, oh plus 4 or 5 weeks of total sunshine in say June, July or August!!”

Torquay's Grosvenor Hotel is famous once more as a new series of Channel 4's The Hotel begins, but is the show good for Torbay?
