Festival celebrates fishing, seafood and maritime heritage

ORGANISERS of the fishing industry heritage festival Fishstock are putting the final touches to what promises to be the last big events of the summer.

Saturday's one-day Brixham extravaganza will see half a dozen bands from South Devon perform for the crowds with a mixture of pop, jazz and rock.

Fishstock Brixham is a celebration of the fishing, seafood and maritime heritage of the most successful English fishing port and the music will be the icing on the cake.

Co-organiser Capt Jim Portus, said: "Everything is ready for Fishstock. What we need now is some decent weather so fishermen can go out fishing and we get some fish. Everything else is firing on all cylinders.

"We have entertainment for adults and children, great local bands and top cookery events with local chefs.

The musical extravaganza will begin at 11am on the main Coombe Fisheries-sponsored stage.

Two live theatre kitchens will be provided by Castles Kitchens, whose managing director Dave Styles will compere a long list of well-known and respected seafood chefs as they demonstrate their trade.

The show will start at 10.45pm with Sue Lucas doing what champion fishmongers do best.

Michelin-starred chef Simon Hulstone from The Elephant will perform a masterclass involving audience participation.

Mitch Tonks, chef and owner of the Seahorse and Rockfish restaurants in Dartmouth, will make his return to Fishstock.

He will challenge Dartmouth's other great chef, David Jones, of Manna from Devon, to a Ready Steady Cook-style duel.

Finally, in the main kitchen at 3.45pm, David Jones will go head to head with Richard Hunt, chef at The Grand Hotel.

Throughout the afternoon David Galpin, David Berry and David Wells from South Devon College will conduct masterclasses with the audience having a go at seafood preparation and cookery.

There will be more than 60 stalls and displays in the fish market hall converted for the day into a top-quality exhibition centre and on the quay side where modern and heritage fishing boats will be open to tour.

Captain Portus added: "It's all weather dependent but because it is under cover it will all go ahead.

"People don't need to be put off by the rain because everything will happen.

"I would hope that people who have had such an awful summer will want a really good day out to end their summer holiday."

Capt Portus said the raft race planned for the afternoon on Saturday had to be cancelled due to a lack of interest. He said: "I have taken the decision to cancel it because not enough people came forward. "
