Firefighters rescue hand-stuck toddler
A MISCHIEVOUS toddler got more than he bargained for when he became stuck in a weight-lifting machine.
The two-year-old Torquay boy needed firefighters to release him after putting his hand in the wrong place.
Fire and ambulance crews worked together to disassemble the machine and free the boy's hand.
He was not seriously hurt in the incident which happened in Luton Road around 4pm on Saturday.
His grandmother, who did not want to be named, said: "He had come to my house to visit with his mum and we were all there laughing and playing when it happened.
"He was playing motorbikes on the weight bench. There were no weights there and it looked safe.
"The next thing we knew he had his little hand stuck in a hole. I don't know how he managed to do it but he was stuck up to the wrist and getting more and more distressed.
"We tried to unscrew the nuts and bolts with a pair of pliers but we didn't have the right tools.
"After 10 minutes we called the fire brigade because he was getting a bit upset."
She said firefighters were there within minutes and had the boy out within seconds.
"They were brilliant," she said.
"He is a good boy and a bit adventurous but I think from now on we'll keep him away from the weight bench."
Torquay fire station watch manager Mark Wileman explained: "We attended a report of a two-year-old boy who had become trapped in a weight-lifting machine.
"With the ambulance crew we dismantled some of the machine to release his hand.
"There didn't appear to be a lot wrong with him, he was just distressed.
"We left him in the care of the ambulance crew."
