THE construction firm tasked with rebuilding Dartmouth Academy is to be announced soon, the school has revealed.

Two firms have been shortlisted by the school for the £8million rebuild contract.

Dartmouth Academy principal Nick Hindmarsh said the winner would be announced shortly.

He said the two companies recently submitted their final proposals for the rebuild of the academy site, which will create the town's first new school in more than 30 years.

It is only the second purpose-built academy in the country.

School bosses and governors challenged the companies to come up with a modern, flexible and exciting set of buildings which would support the education of the town's children and encourage the community to use the site more.

Construction is due to start in September and the new school will open in spring 2014.

Mr Hindmarsh said once the contractor is announced, there will be a series of events aimed at informing students, parents, future parents, staff and the public about the rebuild and what it is going to achieve.

He said: "We can't wait to reveal the winning contractor and start work on this amazing build project.

"We are going to create the very first purpose-built, all-through school in the country.

"Everyone will benefit from this build — the students, teachers, parents and wider community.

"We want to be a community hub that is used all day, 365 days of the year, not just during school hours in term time.

"The involvement of Mitch Tonks, for example, changing the way people view school dinners, shows that we want to create something exciting and different here — a school which is inspirational to all, and which brings the community together.

"We are all looking forward to this process."
