FIVE STARS

IF ANYONE was in any doubt as to how Metronomy’s sometimes-delicate electronic stylings would transfer from hi-fi headphones to a hot and sweaty live club, Joseph Mount and his band blew those doubts away pretty quickly last night.

Driven along by Anna Prior’s floor-shaking drums and the mighty bass of Gbenga Adelekan, they quickly had the walls pounding with a set that kept the crowd dancing and cheering through their Sunday evening.

Mount seemed genuinely thrilled with the reception at what was the band’s first-ever appearance in Devon, despite their background and music being so steeped in local influences and his own roots in Totnes.

And in The Bay the crowd had an anthem they could genuinely feel they owned.

It was written about Torbay, the spectacular video was filmed just a stone’s throw from the harbourside venue, and from the intro to the end, the dancefloor was filled with leaping bodies and waving hands.

It was very much a song for them, and the crowd grabbed it and held on tight.

“This is a dream come true for me,” said Mount, looking out across the crowd, and there was a real enjoyment in the performance throughout, even when technical gremlins threatened to wipe out Oscar Cash’s keyboard.

A few quiet moments for repairs allowed Mount to exchange some banter with the audience before the pace picked up again.

Metronomy were often mesmerising, with Mount and Cash weaving vocals, guitars, keyboards and saxophone over Prior and Adelekan’s thumping rhythm section, and older material mixed well with songs from the English Riviera album.

Best song of the night was The Look, but older tracks like Heartbreaker and A Thing For Me were close behind.

Laser lights added to the spectacle, and it was good to see the Venue packed for a top-quality live gig. The event was supported by the Attic, the Herald Express and 247.

Support acts included These Reigning Days, the new project of former Quails frontman Dan Steer.

Playing only their second live gig, the three-piece band were superb, with a growing collection of original songs showing off tight harmonies and excellent musicianship. Expect big things from them in the near future.

Metronomy play tonight at Dartington's Great Hall.

“Shockingly average band, just goes to show what hype can do. Genre mashing has become more important than having good songs, or being good musicians or both it would seem. I can't even say that if they had a decent drummer they would be better. Music is a subjective thing, but this band do not deserve the plaudits they are recieving, they are a mediocre to average band regardless of musical taste.”

“I went to this so called event and they was dismal. Very boring songs, terribly dressed and a sad example of what Torbay is. I seriously doubt the last poster on here went to see them and therefor does not have a valid comment on this topic. Maybe they should learn to button it.”

“Don't be ridiculous, I don't stalk "Jason" mate, just bring to account. You need more bringing to account than anyone else who posts on here, because you make more offensive comments than anybody else, by a long way. By the way mate, was your last comment a threat? I'd be very interested to know, as would the administrators of this form I'm sure.”
