Flying kites in climate message
KITES flying over Paignton tomorrow will mark the town's contribution to a worldwide climate change protest.
The kite gathering in Goodrington's Youngs Park will be among more than 3,000 events in more than 160 nations forming the largest ever global day of climate action.
There will also be a banner-making event at Paignton Zoo to highlight the same global campaign.
The events are being co-ordinated by the international organisation 350.org to urge world leaders to take fast and effective action on global warming.
The name of the organisation has been chosen because 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide is the safe upper limit for the atmosphere, according to the latest scientific data.
The current CO2 concentration is 390 parts per million.
Local organisers Claire Collis and Holli Youster say they hope as many people as possible will join them for the kite-flying event, which begins at 3.45pm.
They will also be speaking during tomorrow's Green Solutions Festival at Paignton Zoo, in which children will be making banners as part of the 350 campaign.
"There's no doubt now that the citizens of Torbay want to see real action from the world on global warming before the problem gets any worse," said Claire, who is a member of the UK Youth Climate Coalition.
At the same time as the kites fly over Youngs Park, people all over the world will be taking similar action.
Events will include everything from climbers with 350 banners on the slopes of Mount Everest to government officials in the Maldive Islands holding an underwater cabinet meeting to demand action on climate change before their nation disappears.
