A WALL is being built to stop people using a public footpath in picturesque Babbacombe for drugs and sex.

Torbay Council has declared the small path out of bounds to the public after reports of anti-social behaviour in the area.

Torbay Council is building the wall and putting up fencing to block access to the path behind public toilets on Babbacombe slopes.

It comes in response to ongoing issues reported to police.

The minor path begins at the rear of the public toilets, near Babbacombe Theatre. It runs alongside two main popular footpaths that link Babbacombe Downs to Babbacombe beach.

The council says its closure will not stop the public getting to these facilities in any way.

A small number of trees will also be felled to provide natural barriers. The council says sea views for visitors will be improved as a result.

Cllr Jeanette Richards, said: "Babbacombe is a truly wonderful and picturesque part of the Bay and is popular with both residents and visitors throughout the year.

"While this action is regrettable it is absolutely necessary if we are to maintain the quality, reputation and safety of our beautiful Bay.

"We recognise the importance of the two major footpaths in the same area and we will be taking the opportunity to work with the probation service to carry out improvement works on these paths at the same time."

“"Ongoing issues reported to the police" As we pay for the police I think we are entitled to know why they have have not taken any action rather than expect to Council to deal with this by closing facilities. Drugs and public sex are both covered by legislation which the police should use. We must start posing the question, what is the point of the police force ( sorry police service )”

“Remove the Town Hall benches because 'druggies use them'. Knock down the banjo because 'Druggies use it'. Fence off the footpath because 'druggies use it'. Build drug rehab centres, doss houses and precribed methadone despensing chemists in the centre of Torquay and you will find 'druggies will use' most things.”

“Get the police to patrol the damn path a few times a week if there's a problem with inappropriate behaviour. Isn't that what they're there for? You can't keep closing off facilities just to stop behaviour that you don't like; it doesn't stop it, it just moves it somewhere else.”
