Free Torquay breakfast event challenges businesses to work with graduates
Torbay Development Agency is partnering with the Torbay and South Devon Employment and Skills Board (ESB) to host a free breakfast event on 28 March to help local businesses find out about the value of employing graduate students.
“Growing your business with graduates” takes place in the Chatsworth Suite at the Toorak Hotel in Torquay from 8am to 10am.
The latest report from graduate recruitment research company High Fliers shows the graduate market in the UK is expected to grow 2.7% in 2013, with employers looking to hire over 18,000 new graduate students. SMEs are best placed to create these vacancies to meet the needs of their business, graduates, and the wider economy.
To address common misconceptions about the cost of recruitment and salaries, appropriateness of skills, and the sectors which could benefit from student or graduate input, the event will focus on what bringing a graduate in can do for your business, with information on offer about the various options, schemes and support available to employers.

In addition to talks from University of Exeter and Plymouth University, and South Devon College on the prospects of graduate recruitment, delegates will hear from Lucy Willoughby, a graduate recruit at South Devon’s Tally Ho Holidays and Don McIntosh, Managing Director at the company, about the positive impact Lucy has had on their business.
Mayor of Torbay, Gordon Oliver said: “Torbay businesses can benefit from the high quality of new graduates in the region and I fully support such events which encourage businesses to tap into our great talent pool.”
Deborah Passmore, Partnership Executive for the Torbay Development Agency said: “Hiring graduates can bring significant benefits to a business and with this event we want businesses that have not yet taken on, or thought of taking on, a graduate to consider this as a positive step to support the future growth and success of their business.”
Lucy Willoughby said: “Graduates can help with parts of your business which you wanted to improve but never had the time or resources to do so. Following my employment as a dedicated marketing graduate and the implementation of a bespoke marketing plan we have seen significant growth in our customer base and subsequently our coach tours programme.”
Limited free parking and refreshments will be available, and attendees can register free of charge at www.torbaydevelopmentagency.co.uk/graduates.
