Fundraisers planning funny stuff for money
A WHOLE host of comic capers have been organised for Red Nose Day tomorrow.
Across South Devon people will be dancing, swimming and generally having a blast in aid of comic relief.
But the fundraising has already begun.
Three pupils from Westlands School in Torquay danced over four miles from their school gates to Paignton pier and raised more than £400.
Teenagers at the Newton Abbot Entry to Employment programme took part in a fancy dress walk, raising more than £200.
Tutor Chloe Wills said: "It went really well. All the youngsters dressed up. We walked through town and lots of people donated.
"It was a great atmosphere."
Events yet to take place include swimming walking, cycling — even eating dry Weetabix.
Staff from Sainsbury's in Paignton will be dancing on the hour every hour from 10am until 6pm and at 2pm a particularly hairy member of staff will be having his chest waxed.
Comic Relief coordinator at the store, Karen Bridges, said there will also be shoe shining, hair braiding and the shop management in the stocks throughout the day.
Brave Anne Dinwiddy, 24, will be donning a mermaid costume and going for a dip in the sea to raise money. The swim will take place on Paignton beach near the pier at 2.15pm on Friday.
Anne said: "I am a bit nervous, it's going to be very cold, but I'm looking forward to it."
Two music students from South Devon College are giving people the chance to record their own songs. Recording slots can be bid for and all bids must be in today by 4pm.
Matt Dart will be pedalling for money but not getting very far as he does a static cycle race at Perfect Pets in Hyde Road, Paignton.
TK Maxx in Torquay will be raising money with a grand raffle, fancy dress refreshments and guess the name of the bear. Among the prizes up for grabs in the raffle are a full car service from AMC motor engineering, three-month membership to Castle Gym, Sunday lunch for two and a bottle of wine at the Grand Hotel.
Josie's Braids in Market Street, Torquay, will be raising money throughout Friday and Saturday. They will be selling wigs and hair strands, face painting and nail painting — all in red. Twenty-five per cent of the proceeds from this will go to comic relief.
Children at All Saints Primary School in Newton Abbot won't be getting dressed for school on Friday as they arrive in pyjamas for the day.
Sainsbury's Newton Abbot has a range of Comic Relief merchandise for sale as they urge people to 'do something funny for money'.
Warren Knight, store manager of Sainsbury's Newton Abbot, said: "Last year Sainsbury's colleagues raised £1.1million for Comic Relief and this year we are all determined to raise even more."
Keen cyclists Simon McKay and Ryan Beman will be riding from Brixham to Torquay as many times as possible throughout the day.
A group of Prince's Trust volunteers will be putting their best foot forward as they take part in a fancy dress walk from Brixham to Torquay. They will set off from the Prince William statue in Brixham at 10am.
Pupils at KEVICC in Totnes will be using their map reading skills to navigate themselves around the site looking for the letters of Red Nose Day. While they hunt they will also come across activities where they compete against the teachers and each other. Students will be dressed in a red PE kit for the session.
Staff at the Rainbow Nursery at The Mansion in Totnes will be entertaining the children and attempting to eat dry Weetabix.
