In a letter, the original star of the West End show said: "As far as I'm concerned Me and My Girl is without doubt the best British musical of all time.

"It is a show with everything: great songs, wonderful characters and just about the funniest script you'll find in any theatre.

"I spent two very happy years at the Adelphi theatre in London's West End and was thrilled when asked to kick off the first national tour.

"After three years in Me and My Girl, one might think that I had had enough. But if the opportunity arose I would leap at the chance of pulling on that broken-down, black and white, dogtooth check suit and bowler hat to Lambeth Walk through another 1,100 performances.

"Me and My Girl was my first venture into musical theatre and has a very special place in my heart.

"Therefore, I would like to ask TOPS Musical Productions to take good care of it.

"It is a show you cannot help but enjoy and love. With Rob Young on the stick, I know my favourite show is in good hands."

He added: "Me and My Girl will leave you and your audience with the kind of memory that when recalled will make you smile for many, many years to come.

"So, in true theatrical tradition, I would like to wish TOPS 'break a leg' oi!"
