'Gay pub' plans move up the road
TORBAY'S famous 'gay pub' The Meadfoot Inn is moving to bigger premises.
The pub is transferring to the former Hesketh Arms, also in Torquay's Meadfoot Lane, which has stood empty for nearly a year.

The Meadfoot Inn, whose slogan is 'the most diverse pub in the Bay', will not change its name because of its nationwide reputation.
"We are closing the Meadfoot after 98 years and transferring up the road," said Richard Long, who owns the pub jointly with Robin Jones.
"We will have more space and we will be able to do food.
"We are keeping the name and our distinctive pub sign because everybody knows the Meadfoot.
"We have had a lot to do at the Hesketh because it was repossessed and everything they couldn't take they smashed.
"Also there were squatters in there who set fires in the basins and the bath, smashed windows and smashed holes in the walls. It was a right mess."
It is hoped the pub will transfer to its new home by the end of March.
"We are moving the furniture and it will be the same mix of old and new," Mr Long said. "We have been here for five years now and business is very good. This move is a step in the right direction for us."
The pub is hosting a Meadfoot Lane street party in June during this year's second gay pride festival.
"The Meadfoot is a community pub for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population. It's really for anybody. So long as you don't cause any trouble, you're welcome."

“What a sad sorry lot you moaners are. One I would like to where people get the idea (or the figures in the first place) to say the Herald readers are only 5% gay! I wasn't aware that the herald had ever done census on it readers sexuality. Two... why it seems that people seem to attack the gay communitys figure heads in Torquay! What business is of a number of trouble makers, who I firmly believe are probably one or two people, I shall name no names, who just love to cause trouble. Jealousy me thinks! Richard and Robin, Matt Newbury and all the other people in the community who stick there heads out to try and make something of this community and devote there time and energy to us should be praised for there hard work not villified. There are hard working people across the community who deserve better treatment. As for comments about the meadfoot not being straight friendly the gentlemen who commented has obviously never tried going into Mambos of a Saturday night with his partner...now that isn't friendly! However I don't like it in there so I don't go back, doesn't mean I tell others nor to go it's up to them. If you don't like then don't go there. And I strongly believe that if you were thrown out of the meadfoot it certainly won't of been because you were straight! It would of been because you were Drunk or causing trouble, you would of received the sand treatment there as anywere for that kind of behaviour. Everyone is entitled to an opinion..let's just make sure they are worthwhile and not petty jealousy and name calling.”

“well well,i was not going to comment and was going to stay away from lowering myself to reply to such unfair comments but alas i find myself boiling and need to.First of all... ref anon..Iam the bar manager at the meadfoot inn and straight ,so where your comments regards us not making straights welcome come from baffles me,they are unfounded and can be proven to be if evidence is what you need' then it can be provided.
2nd of all....ref arthur(if that is your name????) We have photographic evidence aswell as bills to proove the amount of work that HAD to be carried out to provide our patrons and future patrons a comfortable and safe place to ENJOY themselves.Regards to the comment about the" typical catty comment from mr long",let me point out that mr. Long and mr.Jones have done more than thier fare share to support the local gay scene and provide the local people with a clean, safe and friendly place to drink, so let me point out to you Arthur ? ,the only catty comments appear to be aimed at Mr.Long and not from him. Anyway I'm sure there's more important thing's in the world to worry about . The Meadfoot Inn X X”

“Typical catty comment by Richard Long. I happen to know that the pub was handed back to the mortgage company in a perfect working condition as was required and could have started trading again that day. It was subsequently seriously damaged and vandalised due the company failing to secure the property, which led to anything of value being stripped, including the twin boilers! And as for the Meadfoot being straight friendly I suggest Ian from Torquay is another plant by Matt Newbury in his continued quest for gay glory for the Bay.”
