Grand opening at the Brixham Battery
THE BRIXHAM Battery Heritage Centre Group was founded in 1999 as a group of volunteers helping to restore the Brixham Battery and provide on-site information to the general public. The group uses the Artillery Training Section hut as its education centre and museum on a 25-year lease from Torbay council.
Easter Sunday sees the 'grand opening' of the harbour defence pill-box, war shelter rooms and tunnel and the 1940s restored 'cottage' room. You are invited to come along and meet 'Winston', pictured. The battery will be open from 11am with guided tours of the battery emplacements by uniformed stewards.

Brixham Museum and History Society was founded in December 1957 to record, preserve and promote the story of the historic port of Brixham and its people.
The society opened Brixham Museum on June 2, 1958, originally in a former pilchard press in Higher Street. The museum was an early success, and expanded into the first floor of two neighbouring cottages. In the 1960s, it housed the collection of the National Fisheries Museum. In 1967, Torbay Borough Council offered financial support and in 1976 the museum opened at the present site, the former police station and sergeant's house on New Road, near Bolton Cross.
Tomorrow you are invited to come along for the St George's Day Spring Fayre, a free event that will be opened by Herald Express columnist Bob Curtis. It runs from 10.30am to 4pm with crafts and home produce, tombola, children's activities, street performers, Britannia Cafe and more.
The museum is hosting a talk by Pat Grant called Human Evolution on Monday, May 9, at 2.30pm. Doors open at 2pm in the museum with an entry fee of £1 for member, £2 non members.
The museum is at The Old Police Station, Bolton Cross, Brixham. For details call 01803 856267 or visit www.brixhamheritage.org.uk

The search is on for young people and organisations in Torbay who want to improve their local communities.
Torbay Council's Youth Service is offering help to young people in Year 11 who want to do something worthwhile during the summer holidays and community and voluntary organisations that need help delivering projects.
Torbay Youth Service is part of a successful South West consortium bid, co-ordinated by Young Devon, to pilot the Government's National Citizen's Service, which will run during July, August and September 2011.
Under the scheme, young people supported by youth workers will meet local community groups, ward partnerships and voluntary organisations to identify, plan, organise and deliver a 30-hour social action project in their local area. The aim of the project is to enable young people from a diverse social mix to work together to benefit and or improve their local community. The scheme lasts for seven weeks with two residentials.
Torbay Youth Service is looking for 90, Year 11 pupils across Torbay to take part in the scheme. They must have completed their exams by the start of the programme and be 16 years old by the August 31, 2011.
Youth development worker Jo Penhaligon said: "This is an amazing opportunity for young people in Torbay to come together and work on a project that will develop their strengths, give them new experiences and increase their confidence and self-esteem.."
Young volunteers or community groups with a project they could help deliver should go to www.my-bay.org.uk for more information. Alternatively they can contact Loraine Moss on 01803 208278 or email youth.service@torbay.gov.uk
