Did you know that grandparents account for one third of the population, with 1.7 million new grandparents being added to the ranks every day?
With the generation gap closing, there’s no denying that there are more grandparents now than ever and what’s more the role that they are playing in society has become ever more important. According to a recent survey grandparents are playing a crucial role in bringing up the next generation with a staggering 72% providing childcare for their children’s offspring. More than 50% have also provided financial support to their children and grandchildren in the past twelve months too.
With this growing trend it’s not surprising that Age Concern championed the introduction to a national Grandparents’ Day back in 1990. Widely celebrated across the world, it seemed only right that British grandparents got the recognition and appreciation they deserved too. However in spite of this, since its introduction to the UK, only 66% of grandparents have ever celebrated the occasion.
