"We were up for three awards, best video, best band and best album, and we thought we might have had a chance in the video category.

"When that came and went we thought our chance had gone, but to win best album, beating the likes of Joss Stone, was amazing.

"We have obviously got a bit of a buzz going at the moment."

Babysnakes, who closed the awards show with a live set, are currently working on a new EP which is due out at the end of the year. Live dates are planned when the new music is completed.

Humanitarians' frontman John Mathew said the band were 'absolutely ecstatic' to receive their award.

He said: "We couldn't believe it. We are all thrilled.

"It comes during a really good spell for us, with the EP for sale and download, and receiving airplay on BBC Radio Six Music."

You can hear the Humanitarians for yourself in a gig at the Cellars Bar in Teignmouth tomorrow night.

The coveted Best Act award went to Mad Dog McRea.

Other award winners were:

Best acoustic act, Katie Marie; Best folk act, Philip Henry and Hanna Martin; Best indie/punk act, The Computers; Best blues act, The Wildcards; Best country/Americana act, Mike Shameless; Best reggae/ska act, Melosa; Best jazz act, The Swing Empire; Best soul/RnB act, The Loose Cannons; Best metal/rock act, I Divide; Best new artist, Maz Totterdell; Best music video, Places in Dreams by Casitas.

Best FM DJ, John Govier of BBC Radio Devon; Beacon of the South West Award 2012, Show of Hands; Best producer, Lee Fletcher; Best tribute act, The Fab Beatles.

The evening featured live performances from The Simmertones, Maz Totterdell, Honey Sol, Secrets for September and Mark Felgate.

“Totally agree with the other comments .Its a disgrace that jackson cooper was not given an award, and that fact that the public nominated for him yet some suits in London decided to give it to the usual run of the mill , not very good BBC fellow (did i see on the website that the public voted him 3rd ? ) is even more of a micky take .Im sorry but its true .

Ps just got the Humanitarians album and its fantastic, First heard that Jacksons radio show too.!”

“I was simply pointing out that the winners are chosen independently, to dispel the suggestion that it was a "political" set-up on the part of the organisers. I actually nominated JC for the award myself, so I am not in anyway disagreeing with you that he is an exemplary supporter of the South West music scene. I happen to know that the people behind the awards also care very much about local talent and actually make a financial loss with this event, so should be respected and not be accused of skewing results, which is a rather serious allegation.”

“well vagabondgirl that just gives strength to Wyattr3 argument. London decides the winner of a South west music award! . F*** And people wonder why we get over looked down here . Why oh why do we never get it right in this country .Didn't a certain DJ just put in the local aspect for effect anyway after a surge in popularity for South West Music . ? My real south west music champion is Jackson Cooper, not some wolf in sheep clothing”

“The awards organisers have nothing to do with choosing the winners in each category. All nominations are sent off to a London music magazine, where three independent judges check out the nominees, choose the winners, and send the names back down to Exeter in sealed envelopes. Nobody knows the content of the envelopes until the awards presenters open them on stage on the night, in front of the audience.”

“Well Done to the Humanitarians a great band. Its a shame that long standing and supportive radio presenter Jackson Cooper wasn't given best DJ as well.Being nominated twice in two years and still not getting a trophy is a disgrace!! The awards should be kicking them selfs hard.Although i guess giving the BBC a win cant hurt the awards PR people. As usual i fear a political reason and not one of talent or justification .”
