GRITTERS were out on the roads of Devon this afternoon in preparation for widespread ice and frost forecast to hit the county overnight and over the weekend.

Motorists are being advised to take extra care as roads could become icy with an early freeze forecast for this evening.

A Devon County Council spokesman said road surface temperatures are expected to drop below freezing in large parts of the county after 8pm this evening, and after 6pm on high ground on Dartmoor, with lows of around -2 C in North and East Devon.

While it will be warmer in South Devon, conditions will still be monitored throughout the night.

Further night-time frosts are expected over the weekend and into the early part of next week.
