Former Gulls turning out in support of Hutcheson
TORQUAY UNITED manager Paul Buckle is to pull on his boots again - for a worthy cause.
In addition to the Gulls, the 38-year old Plainmoor boss also enjoyed spells principally with Brentford, Colchester United and Exeter City while making over 400 league appearances.
And he will figure in a mix of former Torquay United All-Stars, managed by United's current managing director, Colin Lee, and including John Gayle, Alex Watson, Jimmy Aggrey, Lee Russell, Gary Smart, Tom Kelly, Mark Loram, Ian Bastow, Matt Hockley and goalkeeper Ken Veysey.
They will face a Craig Hutcheson XI at Buckland Athletic's Homers Heath Ground next Thursday (7pm) in a charity match to raise money for local amateur footballer Craig Hutcheson, 32, a window fitter who is still out of work following an industrial injury in August in which he was close to losing an arm.
Hutcheson, a father of two young children, has played for Kingsteignton Athletic, Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracey, Ipplepen Athletic and Clyst Rovers, but had re-joined Totnes and Dartington SC at the time of his accident in August.
And it is Totnes & Dartington SC who've put next week's game together, with their first team manager (and former Torquay player, of course) John Gayle to the forefront in the arrangements.
"John was the one who started it all off on Craig's behalf, while we are indebted to Colin Lee for making himself available as manager of the Torquay United All Stars and Buckland Athletic for making their ground available," said T&D club official Charlie Stephens.
In addition to an admission charge, there will be a draw on the night for a set of football kit donated by Lovell Sports.
"We've already written and heard back from a number of South Devon clubs wanting to take part in the draw, while there is still time for clubs we haven't managed to contact," added Stephens.
The Craig Hutcheson side will be managed by former Bovey Tracey manager Lee Dorsett, with Galmpton United Gents first team manager Adam Kerswell as assistant manager.
Their side will include many of Hutcheson's former team-mates, among them Eric Cox, Kurt Brown, Graham Cooper (ex Halifax Town), Jason Charlesworth, Willie Young (ex Torquay United and Aston Villa), Darren Vicary, 'Titch' Campbell and John Coote.
"I've been in touch with over 30 players to play, and no-one has turned me down," said Dorsett.
