Harry's hat-trick as Devon cruise to victory
CORNWORTHY'S Harold Stevenson was unbeaten at doubles and mixed in the Yonex veteran's inter-county championships as the Devon over 50 team beat Somerset 9-3 at Westlands, Yeovil.
The Torbay & District league had three players in the team with Stevenson (Paignton Red) joined by Rob Drew (Adelphi Shuttles) and Dawvale Kingsdown's Jane Bartlett, who helped the ladies to a clean sweep in the doubles.
While Stevenson was winning twice alongside Paul Haley (Plymouth), Jane Bartlett teamed up with Anne Jones (Exeter) to also bag a brace of wins after signing off with victory over Val Fraser and Rose Feetenby 21-23, 21-17, 21-14.
Stevenson completed his personal hat-trick when he and fellow team number one Teresa Simic (Exeter) beat Stuart Pilkington and Val Fraser 21-16, 21-13.
Drew got on the scoresheet alongside Anne Jones, beating Sammy McGrory and Di Morgan 21-8, 21-19.
Away in Bournemouth, the Devon O60 team lost to Dorset 8-4 with the O40 team struggling to contain the opposition ladies' in going down 9-3.
"The Dorset ladies' were much too strong for our players," said Devon official Margaret Banyard. Julie Frost (Marine) and Theresa Ford (Paignton) worked hard and Ford was rewarded late on when she and Gareth Pearse (Plymouth) beat Heath Flicos and Sue Higbee 21-9, 19-21, 21-13.
PAIGNTON Red were beaten by great rivals Marine 17-10 in Division One of the Torbay & District medley league after top lady – Karen Major – was injured in the opening doubles.
After partnering Richard Lane to victory over Martin Webber and Janine Chidgey 21-13 in the opening game of the night. the unfortunate Paignton lady took no further part in the match.
Rachel Irish and Rowan Despard (Paignton) had the satisfaction of beating Krys Webber and Jo Bojar 21-12, 21-17, but Martin Webber, Phil Drew and Gareth Pearse rallied round to win two of the three men's doubles to see Marine safely home.
In the build up to the match the Reds welcomed Harold Stevenson back into the fold after a spell at Marine.
Stevenson won all his three doubles against Acorn, thanks to the support of respective partners Rowan Despard, John Elliott and David Whitworth as the Reds won 27-0 at St Cuthbert Mayne.
In Division 2, youngster's Steven Ford and Dan Elliott kept the average age down as Paignton Blue beat Adelphi Shuttles 18-9 at Torquay Town Hall.
