THE police helicopter helped track down a man hiding in trees after a search of woodlands near Brixham Community College.

The search began after police went to carry out a search at a house in Brixham and a man was seen running off from the back door.

At around 7.15pm on Tuesday, the police helicopter lifted off from its base at Middlemoor, Exeter and routed towards Brixham.

The helicopter flew overhead and began an aerial search while police on the ground were directed by the crew of the helicopter to circle a wooded area at the rear of properties.

A helicopter spokesman said: "Once the area was securely contained, the helicopter crew commenced a search using their highly sophisticated thermal image camera and located a heat source which they believed to be that of a person hiding in the trees.

"Ground units were guided in by the crew to the location of the male suspect.

"He was subsequently detained and is currently assisting police with their inquiries."
