High times on the English Riviera Wheel
Taller than Nelson's Column at the dizzy height of nearly 60 metres, the English Riviera Wheel will be sited in Princess Gardens, Torquay, next to the Pavilion, and give breathtaking 360 degree views across the Bay from Monday 20 August to Wednesday 31 October 2012.
The impressive wheel, which is coming to the Bay direct from London's Olympic celebrations, has 40 enclosed lit gondolas, each of which can carry up to six passengers and can also take wheelchairs. The wheel is almost completely silent in operation featuring the very latest in observation wheel technology and is suitable for all ages.

The wheel opens to the public on Monday 20 August on the same day that the Bay is welcoming another auspicious visitor, the cruise ship Prinsendam. The ship is marketed as the ‘Elegant Explorer’ and carries around 800 passengers, some of whom will be welcomed to explore the English Riviera.
Torbay Mayor Gordon Oliver, who will be taking the inaugural flight at 9am on Monday 20 August said: "The English Riviera Wheel will offer breathtaking views of the Bay from a rare perspective. I hope it will be yet another exciting attraction to encourage both residents and visitors to come and enjoy all that we have to offer in the English Riviera.”

“This is great news. From the top, on a clear day you will be able to see the drop-outs walking down Abbey Road, the drugged up zombies walking around castle circus, the fights on the harbourside, the shoplifters on Fleet walk and any muggings that take place around the back streets of Torquay without putting yourself in any danger.”

“At last a practical attraction for Torquay that has a good chance of returning on a regular basis!”

“Before the nimby's and Daily Mail readers start, this is totally funded by the company themselves. No public money is going into the cost. Can't wait think it will be pretty good, if only for a short time”

“Some positive news from Torbay Council for once, hurray!
A good and worthwhile addition, and sensible pricing too.”

“Will the council be sparing the wheel the inconvenience of having to pay rent, like they did with the balloon?.”

“Looks good and, unlike the late and unlamented balloon, the price structure appears reasonable in today's economic climate.
Custerson's "more attractions than any other UK resort" is a bit of a whopper but she is paid to puff I suppose.”
