OWNERS of eco-homes in the South Hams will be throwing their doors open to people keen to adopt environmentally friendly ways of living.

The Open Eco-Homes weekend offers a platform for those who have eco-homes and those who want to build one.

The event will be followed by an environmental fair which will see businesses and community groups offer demonstrations of technology and provide advice and information to help homeowners take a step towards turning their house into an eco-home.

As part of the Open Eco-Homes event, now in its third year, a range of homes and projects will be open to enable anyone interested in carbon-neutral, eco-friendly builds to see ways to implement eco-improvements.

Transition Town Totnes, which is behind the project, said a dozen places in or near Totnes and Dartington will be available to visit with everything from better insulation to a huge biomass boiler, heat pumps, micro wind turbines, photo voltaic and solar hot water panels, solar lighting, use of natural and recycled materials.

Of particular interest will be the Cohousing group at Baltic Wharf which plans to incorporate many eco-features as standard along with community space.

KEVICC is opening the doors of its boiler house to the public for the first time, and students there have made a short film with the help of TTT about sustainability.

Schumacher College at Dartington has a work-in-progress new cob and timber barn and a renovated workshop building to see while Dartington Village Hall will be showing off its recent eco-refurbishment.

There is a leaflet available at Totnes Library and in the information centre with all the details for Open Eco-Homes weekend which will run from tomorrow until Sunday.
