The Hotel - Episode Six - "Day of Reckoning"
GROSVENOR manager Mark Jenkins faced some tough management decisions in the latest episode of Channel Four's The Hotel, set at the hotel in Torquay's Belgrave Road.
He decided to take a tougher line on staff management, and that it was time for events manager Christian to become more cost-conscious.

Mark gave Christian a chance to prove himself by asking him to organise a money-spinning wedding fair at short notice, and to oversee a wedding that The Grosvenor had gifted to a local couple as part of a drive to raise the hotel's profile.
But Christian's personal life is in turmoil and he's suffering from a broken heart.

"Christian's day of reckoning is coming," says Mark.
The series has been attracting more than two million viewers every Sunday night, but not everyone agrees that it is good publicity for Torquay (see related articles on the right of this page and have your say in our online poll)
In the episode, tension is building between Mark and Christian. "Christian's day of reckoning is coming," says Mark. "I can't keep pandering to him.
"Christian is going to have to shape up or ship out."
Reservations manager Alison Pennell, who Tweets as @babybint1, says: "Tonite a gooden, more mayhem on the bay"

“I simply love the Hotel as entertainment. Deciding on a quick break we stayed in the Grosvenor earlier this week for 2 nights. The room was clean, the food good and the staff were absolute darlings - nothing was too much trouble. The hairdresser is a wonderful man who found my phone and saved the day.
Both nights we were there the bar was packed and a spectacular floor show was provided including a singer and top line comedian.
I was accosted by a drunk asking for a new pair of shoes while taking the air one evening which I thought was rather quaint. The seafront is magnificent - We would certainly live in Torquay but for the hills.”

“I'm waiting for Alison to do some work. In every episode she's sitting at an empty desk or putting make-up on! Maybe it's just bad editing”

“Hantsbel, it really depends on the context. In reality, as most hoteliers are finding out, if you want good, intelligent staff who are keen to work you will usually find that you have to look to the rest of europe. I can't really say I have noticed a difference in their driving skills though, they don't tend to take drugs before driving though, is that just a British habit?”

“I made a comment some time ago about a foreign lorry driver who caused a serious accident, and was called racist by people on this site. Yet SidneyNuff puts the British down and urges a hotelier to take on foreign staff! Surely he is being racist in reverse? We have millions out of work partly due to an excess of foreign immigrants. :(”

“Did anyone notice the poor couple trying to recreate the photo of the guys dad??? The photo was obviously taken in Torquay, yet they were convinced they had recaptured the shot around Brixham Harbour!! Couldn't someone from the show have put them right????”

“I just hope they stay inside the hotel with their camera and don't show you anything of Belgrave road. Benefit hostels, off licenses, pubs that smell of cannabis, groups of toothless dossers drinking on the pavement and asking for money. Still it is the centre of our holiday resort.”
