Hotel staff are new stars of reality TV
A MAJOR new documentary following the ups and downs of life at Torquay's Grosvenor Hotel is about to be screened.
The fly-on-the-wall programme The Hotel was shot over the summer and gives a humorous and sometimes uncomfortable look behind the scenes of the business.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT HOTEL: The 'stars' of The Hotel on Channel 4 — staff at The Grosvenor Hotel in Torquay
The first episode will be shown on New Year's Day, and shows the chaos as a couple get married amid mounting pressure and stand-up rows.
It features the hotel's boss Mark Jenkins and his unique style of management.
"I've only seen some of it but I can't really complain about how I see myself on screen because — it's me," he said.
The second series of the popular programme focuses exclusively on Torquay and depicts hotel life at The Grosvenor with cameras in bedrooms and microphones on staff and guests.
"People might be surprised by 'our' depiction of hotel life," he added.
The first episode follows a couple from the Midlands who arrive for their big day, but with a staff shortage, double-booked rooms, disagreements with the wedding co-ordinator and rain on the way, the event prompts manager Mr Jenkins to reveal he is more nervous than he was for his own wedding.
It screens on Channel 4 on New Year's Day at 8pm.

“Let's just hope people up north don't watch it as nobody in their right minds would stay at a place like that after watching what goes on.”

“I love watching this program and wish I could work there! However, I'm amazed at how rude the booking manageress speaks to her boss and gets away with it. He's very patient with her and I think she should show some respect. There are plenty of people who would love to take her place.”

“I love watching this docusoap and it looks fun to work there. However, I'm amazed at how the reservations manageress speaks to her boss and gets away with it. There are plenty of people who would jump at the chance of doing her job. She should show some respect!”

“I just spoke to someone in London and they think the show is a hoot! Although they were at pains to point out they wouldn't be booking their wedding party at The Grosvenor - but that's not to say there aren't a large number of star-struck sadists out there who won't, I suppose?!
Well done to Mark Jenkins for taking the rise out of the hotel sector in Torquay! This will ensure Basil's legacy continues”

“I saw the first episode the other day and I have to say I was felt very embarassed for the staff. They presented themselves as complete amateurs and they looked like they really didnt have a clue. Infact Basil Faulty would have done a much better job! The staff did nothing to promote the image of their hotel and did nothing to encourage anyone to want to visit Torquay. An embarrassment all round and just another reason why I never venture over to the English Riveira as its all too grim and depressing!”

“Now look what you've made me do! I've just spent the evening doing my end of year accounts and saved the darn document without any of the December items! Oh ****!
Oh well, it's 1am and time to crawl into my lovely warm bed for 8 hours of freedom from all this... I can't remember if Ruth voted against any further action on Ritalin or whether she abstained. But she definitely didn't back Parrot's motion... Steve Darling (the leader of Torbay Lib Dems) and his wife, an NHS employee, were away in Egypt at the time of the vote. I also believe the Lib Dem Cllr who runs the Torbay Hospital Shop was opposed ...”

“Don't make me laugh, Isolde. I've always maintained I'm too thin to get hired here... Although, in Torbay, it's also a major disadvantage if you've got all your own teeth!”

“Entertaining! No doubt it will actually increase the sale of 'Just For Men' hair colour though!”
