Hundreds attend South Devon College Annual Awards
TORQUAY'S RIVIERA INTERNATIONAL CENTRE has welcomed hundreds of South Devon College students, staff, employers, guests, family and friends to honour the achievements of students at their annual further education awards ceremony.
Nearly 200 students from all over South Devon who achieved academic success and/or personal growth were rewarded with trophies, certificates and vouchers during the ceremony. The students - of all ages and from all sections of the College – were cheered on by family and friends.
South Devon College Principal Stephen Criddle and Chair of the Governing Body Kevin Mowat introduced Totnes MP Dr Sarah Wollaston MP and special guest Dr Larry F. Devane to address the students and congratulate them. Dr Devane is President of Redlands Community College in Oklahoma, USA, whom the college has a developing partnership.
The culmination of the awards was the announcement of the Paul Haigney Award for 'Outstanding academic achievement and contribution'. It is awarded by the Friends of South Devon College charitable trust. This year the award went to A level student Oliver Hicks, from Paignton, who achieved an A* in Maths, A in Physics and A in Computing. He is studying a masters in Mechanical Engineering Oxford University and was unable to attend, so his mother accepted the award on his behalf.
