“In my road, the potholes and cracked surfaces were marked with white spray. 10 days later they were all repaireed in a workmanlike manner.”

“Beware of the white spray paint! The marks merely indicate that the council has looked at the hole and made a decision on whether it poses a hazard or not. It doesn't mean they will come and fix it. They can take the decision that it's not a hazard and do nothing. Consequently, if you drive into the hole and burst a tyre / buckle a wheel, you have no claim on the council. The fact that their decision that the hole was not a hazard, but proved to be so, is no evidence they're at fault and required to cover your costs. How do I know? A bill for £300, unpaid by the (albeit another) council.”

“@Bleach the Highways Agency only deal with those on major routes, which is basically the A30/38/380 and M5, hence them only having filled in 190 pot holes, while Devon CC had repaired a mere 13,400 pot holes.”

“there's only 8000 miles of road in Devon, that's one pothole every half mile. My observations don't support your figures.
@MrT26: the council doesn't fill holes in the roads at all, that's the responsibility of the Highways Agency. Which you'd know if you'd bothered the read the article you were commenting on with such enthusiasm.”

“There aren't that many different holes, most of the reports are the same hole repeatedly opening up. The council comes along and chucks some cheap rubbish in the hole, doesn't even level the surface up or pack it down properly, so it collapses into the void left under the new tarmac and breaks up within a week.”

“Someone from our council has been down the road and marked half the potholes with a white spray can. Presumably someone else is going to come at some future date and fill in the potholes marked in this manner.
So if you want all the potholes in your road filled as part of the new "Big Society" we're all living in, do we assume we have to fill in the remaining potholes ourselves or do we just buy a can of white spray paint and finish marking those potholes left unmarked?
Just asking so that we all know where we stand (or fall for that matter).”

“I read the news today o boy. 17, 100 holes in Devon. And though the holes were rather small, they had to count them all...”
