Imps trying out eighth boss in nine years
THEY DON'T wait long for their managers at Sincil Bank — new boss Chris Sutton is the eighth man to be given the job in the last nine years.
It's inevitable that Sutton has inherited a squad put together by his predecessor Peter Jackson.
The Imps' main problem has been scoring goals — only nine in 13 league games — and that's the area where Sutton, a fine striker himself, is sure to be working hardest.
In goal is 6ft 2in tall Rob Burch, 25, who earned experience in a series of loan spells when he was a youngster at Spurs before moving to Sheffield Wednesday and then Lincoln in 2008.
There are a couple of interesting characters in Sutton's defensive roster.
Hungarian Janos Kovacs moved from Chesterfield 18 months ago, and six bookings already this season have done little to diminish his popularity with Imps fans.
Aaron Brown had a loan spell at Plainmoor in 2005, during an up-and-down career which started with high promise at Bristol City and then QPR.
A car crash which left him with whiplash injuries in 2002 was followed by a serious knee problem, and he recovered to play for Swindon and Gillingham before moving to Sincil Bank in 2008.
Adam Watts, 21, has just had his loan deal from Fulham extended, while Moses Swaibo joined City from Crystal Palace last January.
Joe Heath is on loan from Nottingham Forest and full-back Daniel Hone. 20, is a product of City's youth scheme.
But also pushing for a place is 35-year-old former Premier League star Ian Pearce, now in the twilight of his career with Chelsea, Blackburn, West Ham for seven years, Fulham and Southampton.
Midfielder Sergio Torres has just returned to Peterborough after a loan spell, so Sutton is hoping that international clearance comes through in time for Bermudan winger Khano Smith, 28, to be involved for the first time.
Alongside Stefan Oakes (see Player To Watch), ex-Gulls loanee Anthony Pulis (Portsmouth, Stoke, Southampton), the son of Stoke boss Tony, supplies work-rate and solid tackling.
Local boy Shane Clarke is a promising winger, while ex-Spurs starlet Cian Hughton, son of Newcastle caretaker Chris, and club stalwart Scott Kerr are also hoping for Sutton's call to action.
Up front Richard Butcher, 28, is now in his third spell at Lincoln, having also played for Oldham and Peterborough.
His current partner is Rene Howe, a solidly built striker on loan from Peterborough after similar spells with Rochdale and Morecambe over the last couple of seasons.
Other striking options are former Blackburn and Rotherham forward Jamie Clarke, ex-trainee Lenell John-Lewis and 20-year-old Chris Fagan.
Former Manchester United trainee Fagan, who played for Eire at Under-17 up to Under-21 level, joined the Glenn Hoddle Academy in Spain when he left Old Trafford, and he's the first player from there to earn a full contract with a League club.
Goalkeeping cover is supplied by 40-year-old Paul Musselwhite, a 700-game veteran from time with Portsmouth, Scunthorpe twice, Port Vale, Hull and Gateshead, among others.
