Injury hit Fishermen add Albion flanker to squad
BRIXHAM will want to get back to winning ways after two defeats when Cleve belatedly visit Astley Park tomorrow.
The South West One leaders have been turned over by Wadebridge and Oldfield , but remain top of the table by eight points.
Although Brixham coach Dan Parkes blames an injury crisis for the current loss of form, he remains confident the Fishermen can play their way out of trouble.
"Good players don't become bad ones overnight and we have enough good men in the side to get over this run," said Parkes.
"I said after Christmas there would be setbacks in the New Year and all the sides at the top would lose a few.
"We've had our share and now we need to grind out a win."
With flanker Tom Clarke and lock Adam Thomas newly pencilled on to the injury list, Parkes has signed Kade Dillon from Plymouth Albion as forward cover.
The Fishermen should have played Cleve last Saturday, however the game was called off due to a frozen pitch.
PAIGNTON came from behind to win 21-5 at Penryn in the only South West One game played.
After Darren Pellow put the Borough ahead in the first half, tries by Mark Palk, Matt Crosscombe and Matt Tichias were converted by Andy Sandercock to put Paignton ahead.
Charlie Mahon, Paignton's head coach, said it was a win over the odds.
"We were delayed getting there and inside 10 minutes were 5-0 down,"
said Mahon.
"The conditions were appalling and we didn't get on top of them until the second half.
"I felt we put Penryn under pressure in the second half and got men into their defensive chinks."
Paignton have no first team game this weekend.
FRIENDS and former team-mates of Martin Thomas are going to be playing it again in his memory on Good Friday.
Thomas, who worked in the building trade, died unexpectedly last January. He was just 46.
A busy scrum-half he had two spells with Paignton and Brixham during his career and later became involved with team management and coaching at Paignton.
Former team-mates Alex Simmonds and Gary Redman are match managing the game, which is going to be played at Queens Park for a trophy donated by law firm WBW.
They are hoping the lure of free beer will bring many of Thomas's old team-mates out of the woodwork.
"The match will be both a memorial and a celebration of Tommo's life," said Simmonds.
"The teams will be made up of Over-35s from the two clubs Martin served with distinction during his playing career.
"During the day we will be raising money for the Devon Air Ambulance, which is the charity chosen by Martin's family.
"WBW have sponsored the Martin Thomas Memorial Trophy and have laid on some free beer for the players."
To get involved in the game as a player or match-day helper, contact Simmonds on lisa.simmonds1@hotmail.co.uk.
Part of the fund-raising effort is selling commemorative match-day shirts and ties, which will be Paignton and Brixham combined.
The cost is £20 and orders – with collar sizes – should be placed with Redman at gary. redman@hotmail.co.uk.
TORQUAY Athletic are now two games behind in the Western Counties division after their planned home game with leaders St Austell was postponed.
The Tics already had a game away to Bideford to clear up, which was rained off in early December.
That game will be played this Saturday afternoon – weather permitting – on what was down on the fixture list as a blank date.
The St Austell game has been pencilled in for February 25.
KINGSBRIDGE should have played Bideford last Saturday, but were denied the opportunity due to bad weather.
As Torquay have a rearrangement against Bideford this Saturday, Kingsbridge can't replay that game.
Their next match will be at home to Bude on February 18 in a league and cup double header.
Kingsbridge were due to meet Bude in the RFU National Cup this Saturday – and again seven days later in the league.
To save time and money the two matches have been amalgamated.
SALCOMBE are on the road to St Just this Saturday in the RFU National Cup.
The cup takes priority over the delayed league game against Wessex, postponed from last Saturday.
New Cross are without a game.
Buckfastleigh will have another go at playing Devon Two leaders University of Exeter.
Promotion hopefuls Dartmouth are away to Devonport High School OBs.
