A FOOD bank in Ivybridge has been given a free car parking space for one day so it can collect food for struggling local families in the area.

Ivybridge Food Bank, set up in 2012 in response to growing demand, is holding a food collection outside the Co-op store in Ivybridge on Saturday April 20 but organisers were concerned that they would be hit by a massive car parking bill.

The food bank volunteers  approached South Hams District Council, which supports the project with the locality budgets of seven local councillors.

As a result the authority decided to offer free use of a car parking bay for the day.

Councillor Kathy Cuthbert, member for Ivybridge Filham ward, said: "It would be wrong to charge a charity like this, which directly benefits members of the local community who need help the most, with a large bill. Food and drink items can be extremely heavy so the team will be using a van to move donations as quickly as possible as space is at a premium.""

Sue Johnson, the chairman of Ivybridge Food Bank, said: "It is wonderful to see how everyone has come forward to help and support the Ivybridge Food Bank making our efforts and aims more achievable by the generosity of local people."
