JACKSON COOPER LIVE AND LOCAL-Brando Walker-Fun-K - EP Review
Hot on the heels of last years record Brando Walker returns to our musical ears with his second E.P Fun-K Expanding his fun fuelled 80's synth funk sound and strong image.I dare you not to feel the need to instantly jump into a box shaped Audi Quattro like its 1988 with the windows down ! But is this just retro filler trying to pass as something different in a musical landscape devoid of anything resembling fun ? Do we the listener need a pastiche of an E.P. running at just three tracks ?
There is a common thread that runs through the music .But that only adds to its strong identity . It's a record that knows who it is and what it needs to be . Brando the ring leader in a world of his own creation"Nothing better to do " sounding like Prince celebrating the end of a shift at the Co-Op Complete with the call to " bring me that synth" it's cousin in waiting "Smoove Mover" ( yes it's spelt that way ) as the title implies , smooth in a sexy I want to impress you pretty lady on the dance floor kinda way ." Camero " slowing down the pace with its call to love . " She likes it rough, it must be love"You just can't help but imagine yourself on the set of Miami vice.
It's lyrics are simple and at times almost child like but it's the musical style and textures that make these tracks what they are. A world that you can inhabit again and again. Radio friendly songs that does what it says on the tin at a time when music can be a little po-faced. I'm not asking for another Steps reunion ,who needs pop like that. You need soul injected pop like this!
