Devon's Jon Tiernan-Locke is thrilled to be joining "the world's best team" after the in-form cyclist signed a two-year deal for Team Sky.

Tiernan-Locke has switched to Sky from Endura Racing, following an incredible season in which the Devonian has to date claimed nine victories.

Chief among Tiernan-Locke's achievements in 2012 was winning the high-profile Tour of Britain in September.

The 27-year-old became the first home-grown rider to win the Tour in 19 years, which led to Tiernan-Locke being called up to the Great Britain squad for the World Road Race Championships in the Netherlands last month.

The tough climber has certainly scaled new heights this year with two stage wins en route to overall victory at the Tour de Mediterranean, before triumphing at the Tour du Haut Var.

Tiernan-Locke also claimed two stage victories which preceded the general classification in July's Tour Alsace.

It had long been anticipated that Team Sky would add the tough-as-teak Tiernan-Locke to their roster of big-name recruits. But unassuming, as always, the proud Plymothian claimed to be "honoured" at securing a contract.

Tiernan-Locke said: "It's an incredible opportunity for me to step up from the UCI Continental ranks. Although I've really enjoyed my time at Endura, I couldn't pass up the chance to join the world's best team.

"When you look at the season Team Sky have had, to even be considered by them was a massive honour for me. I'm over the moon to be riding for them in 2013."

Tiernan-Locke added: "This season has given me a lot of confidence. I can't wait to compete at the very top of the sport. I'm under no illusions – it's going to be a big step-up – but with all the support I'll receive from the coaching staff, and having such talented riders around me, I'll definitely be looking to up my game."
