Dartmouth Academy became part of the Woodland Trust’s “Tree Planting Challenge when 50 trees were planted by some of its younger pupils.

The planting is part of the ‘Jubilee Wood’ project, which aims to plant six million trees in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Garden designer Graham Webb, who has made a habit of helping the Academy with gardening challenges, ably assisted the little green-fingered children.

The Academy has been getting involved with horticulture for a number of years – allowing its younger pupils to get hands on with planting and growing - and last year Scarlett Holmes won a Dartmouth in Bloom award for her ‘Seaside’ garden which still graces the land outside the Academy reception.

Graham helped to create that garden using Scarlett’s detailed drawings, so when Kate Taylor, Director of Learning in the Primary phase at the Academy, secured the 50 trees from the Woodland Trust, she knew who to call!

“Graham was brilliant with the children and they all had a lot of fun planting the trees around the site,” said Mrs Taylor. “He has been a great supporter of the Academy and we are so grateful to have the help of people like him in the community. The children care a great deal about the environment and getting hands on like this is wonderful experience for them. We are delighted to receive these trees from the RHS and are proud to be a small part of the Jubilee Wood.”

Graham said: “I hardly had to lift a finger all day – the children worked very hard planting the trees and they will look fantastic when they get established. I’m delighted to help out the Academy and give the children the chance to get experience of gardening.”
