LABOUR Leader Ed Miliband has pledged his support for the Brixham Coastguard Station, fearing its closure could have 'dire consequences.'

In a message of support to the local coastguard team, Mr Miliband said he was 'very concerned' about the potential loss of the maritime rescue centre.

He said: "The Brixham, Falmouth and Weymouth waters that this station serves is an extremely busy area both for commercial shipping and for leisure activities.

"I worry that with the closure of this station local knowledge of the waters will be lost and this could have potentially dire consequences.

"I'm hopeful that the government will think again and I know that Patrick Canavan (Labour's Torbay mayoral candidate) and the Labour party in Torbay are supporting a strong campaign against these ill-thought out proposals."

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency plans to axe the Brixham coastguard base under a move that would see the loss of 10 coastguard stations across the UK.

Dave Colmer, acting watch manager at Brixham coastguard, said the team appreciated the Labour leader's support.

He said: "Speaking on behalf of the Public and Commercial Services Union members of Brixham coastguard, we appreciate any support from any quarter.

"There are a number of MPs that have backed us and it's nice to see the Labour leader supporting us, too.

"I believe coastal MPs have been made aware of these proposals.

"Obviously, MPs inland would be interested because it's members of their constituencies that go on holiday every year on the south coast. It affects the whole country.

"More people are taking their holidays in this country rather than going abroad and the population of Torbay doubles every summer and it's quite evident that a lot of people come from the inner counties of the country."

From 2006 to 2010, Brixham coastguards co-ordinated 5,878 search and rescue operations.

They also assisted 10,715 people during those four years and rescued 1,709 people from life threatening situations.

Brixham coastguard watch assistant Les Jenkin said: "Our operations are on the increase with the number of extra people staying in this country and coming down to these waters when we do get a decent summer and it's likely to increase in the coming years."

Mr Canavan said: "It is good to see Ed Miliband support the Herald Express campaign to save Brixham coastguard from closure and it should help reinforce the message about the potential risk to life if the closure goes ahead."

“Gleny's you said 50,000 doctors and nurses were losing their jobs. That is not the case as the union survey you are referring to includes support and admin. staff. I am not saying that you don't have a point but you do need to use statements of facts rather more carefully.

As to North Sea Oil, the facts I quoted are correct and there is no need for abuse. UK oil production in the North Sea peaked in 1998. New discoveries have been below replacement levels since then and production continues to decline by about 10% a year. Norway, will eventually become a net oil importer like the UK. We got there faster because we are 12 times bigger and had less oil to start with. We were never self sufficient in oil as we only produced light crude and always needed to import heavy crude as well.”

“I am so sorry to hear that you suffer from sleep apnoea. Have you tried a cotton reel down your back? Or a clothes peg. Banished to the other bedroom now are you? Ed Miliband was born in England not just conceived. Re: The Banning of D I C K, that definitely was not me, why would I, quite like the old sod. Actually he used to keep me in place, well that's your job now. I always was a little welsh tearaway as a child. As you can see I've never really grown up.”

“glenys...your problem is you rant on everything....keep to the subject matter of the thread. That is all we ask.

Miliband was conceived in Britain, well that was the story, most probably on the tombstone of Marx, his parents were from Belgium and escaped from Poland following the Nazi disgraceful persecution of the Jews. No matter what he is from the loins of Poles, that makes him Polish where I live in Torquay. Bit like the Kinnock's in your boat then, their children were conceived in England so that makes him English.

As for D i c k, he was banned by someone reporting him for for abuse, that was either you or an old member from the Army who comes from Boscombe, Bournemouth, didn't like the truth being published about him. Sad old bus conductor he is.

As for writing on here late at night, well that may have something to do with apnoea from which I suffer.

    KEEP TO THE THREADS.”

“REALLY, STUART, I think you should stick to the facts. According to freedom of information responses up to 50.000., Staff (NHS) will be going from different Hospitals. Consisting of Drs., Nurses and Dental Staff. I even have personall experience of my own daughter qualifying 2 years ago, not being able to get a full time job as an RMN (Mental Nurse). Part time....or banking....yes. She has now gone into the private sector, in a full time job. I was sticking to the point when replying to REX. Also re: Ed Miliband, and you know yourself, you are talking absolute Bull**** about North Sea Oil. I absolutely agree with you re: Boats and Jet Skiers (I personally would have Jet Skiers banned altogether), should pay Tax. I myself, have just renewed my Road Tax this morning. To drive on roads full of pot holes, which the Councils, say , they have'nt got money to fix. My answer to that is make people (supervised) on Community Service do it. I hope very much Brixham Coastguard can be saved.PS before you correct my spelling NO 2 ll's in personal....typing errror.”

“Gleny's your arguments would be much more powerful if you stuck to the facts. The 50,000 job losses in the NHS are not doctors and nurses. The union funded survey quoted in the Guardian doesn't break down the statistics into clinical and non-clinical. The only mention in the survey of doctors losing their jobs was of 50 not 50,000 posts. (There are more than 600,000 clinical posts in the NHS).

As to your comment about North Sea oil, - by now we would have been self sufficient - it is simply nonsense. North Sea Oil production peaked in 1998 and had declined ever since. We have not sold it off, simply we have not discovered as much new oil as has been coming out of the ground. Just to put it in perspective, Norway, which has larger reserves than the UK and a population less than Scotland, has depleted 60% of its reserves. It's oil production is likely to peak in the next year or so.

Of course, all this has nothing to do with the Coastguard Station. So back on the subject, why do boat owners, jet skiers etc, not have to pay a "sea tax" like the road tax paid by everyone who uses the roads. This would help pay for keeping the Coastguard stations open and would be fair to those taxpayers who just watch from dry land.”

“Well that's a start, I suppose. Perhaps young Ed can now turn his attention to virulent strains of Mad Cow Disease in the rural workplace (otherwise diagnosed as clinically-obese supervisory envy!)

    lol!”

“REX, ED MILIBAND was born in Britain, his parents fled from Poland, away from your German brethren. Therefore, he is British. As a matter of fact, yes, I do like Poles, have a lovely Polish Dentist. I am sure Ed will do everything he can to save Brixham Coastguard, unlike your lot. Who, by the way, we hear this morning are cutting 50.000., Doctors and Nurses from the (Ring Fenced) NHS. You know this coalition is full of liars, By the way did you read my reply to you on Oliver....Saturday....thread? You know this place amazes me everybody appears to be just like SHEEP......BAAAAH!”

“What are the remarks on this thread about, I thought it was about Mr Ed Miliband, 100% Polish, a naturalised Britain, lending his support to the coastguard station being saved, no chance.

Glenys take it you like Poles.

Can you keep to the point please

One thing I agree with glenys is that this site needs some much needed maintenance.”

“BOB was it not Margaret Thatcher who sold the family silver? Closed down the mines, flogged off gas, electricity, ship building, steel industry. To say nothing about North Sea Oil, by now we would have been self sufficient and not having to rely on foreign dictators (as we are seeing this very day) . Thatcher was the one who closed down REAL Industries that gave employment and created wealth. The heaps of gold never made anyone really rich apart from those already extremely wealthy. YOU BOB, are the one, with a very short memory. P.S. Do your remember when, on her watch, interest rates leapt to 15% because the Government insisted on pegging the pound to the german mark. ?”
