Lloyd and Pawsey lead home contingent in Randall Cup
AFTER the persistent rain during the week which led to the cancellation of the final Wednesday stableford, the sun came out to greet the large field for the Randall Cup Open 4BBB stableford at Stover on Saturday.
With competitors from many parts of the South West and beyond, Stover members found it difficult to find their way on to the leaderboard.
In all there were 88 pairs taking part and top place went to Bill Atkins and Paul Gidley from Crediton with 62 points after countback, which went to the last four holes, from Mike Hewlett and Martyn Walsh (Staddon/Boringdon).
Also on 62 points were Chris Gunn and Adam Bridgewater from Yelverton.
In fourth place was the leading Stover pair of Tony Lloyd and Neville Pawsey with the best of a number of 63-point scorers.
In fact the remaining prize winners were all on this mark and they were Martin Greenslade (Filton) and Graham Steadman (Shirehampton), Clive Hutchings and Jack Potter (Stover), Richard Pascoe and Alan Vickery (Stover/Enmore Park) and Jason Hampton and Andy Beazley (Stover).
On Sunday it was the turn of the 36-hole medal Open for the Ronald Hall Scratch Salver and Michelmore Handicap Cup.
Stover members had mixed fortunes with all the handicap prizes going to home club members, but all scratch prizes going to visitors.
The winner of the Michelmore Cup was Paul Silk (12) with a nett 132 (63+69) with young Jack Potter (6) in the runner-up spot with 134 (66+68). Third place went to Jeff Steward (9) on 136 (65+71).
Best morning round went to Dan Hall (5) with a nett 66 and the best afternoon score of 66 was returned by Owen Vooght (10).
The winner of the Ronald Hall Salver was Royal North Devon junior member Jimmy Mullen, who followed up his excellent morning round of 67 with a steady 72 to finish on 139.
This was one shot better than former Stover member Graham Ruth, now representing Tavistock, who shot 69 and 71.
Shirehampton member Steve Yorke was third on 143 (74+69). The Cock o' Links Cup for the best Stover scratch score was won by Jack Potter with 146 (72+74).
To round off a busy Bank Holiday weekend the Minnie Pascoe mixed foursomes stableford took place on Monday with 38 pairs taking part in glorious sunshine.
The in-form Jeff Steward and his wife Sue won with 33 points on countback from new members Shelagh and Richard Jansen.
Shirley and Steve Williams took third place on 32 points on countback from Jo and Martin Wright.
The ladies played a Texas Scramble for their latest competition, won by Liz Payne, Di Ripley and Olga Lidbury with 69.8.
Eileen Garbutt, Jan Hayman and Pam Giles were second with 72.4, ahead of Pauline Roach, Nuan Forsyth and Sarah Ross on 74.1.
