Love, life and lively fun in 'Ayckbourne's finest' comedy
BIJOU presents Joking Apart at Paignton's Palace Theatre for a four-night run from Wednesday.
Described by the company as 'Ayckbourn at his best', the production is a fast-paced romp through love and life through the seasons.
A spokesman said: "Charming and naturally successful in everything, Anthea and Richard almost unconsciously, but ruthlessly, dominate the lives of those with whom they are associated.
"Over 12 years, Sven, Richard's partner, is virtually nudged out of their firm.
"Brian, who works for Richard, is ineffectual.
"Hugh, the local vicar whose wife is on drugs, falls hopelessly in love with Anthea.
"The play ends with Anthea's daughter awaiting her 18th birthday, perhaps a new reign may be beginning."
The cast is under the direction of John Miles and includes the formidable acting team of mother and daughter, Brenda and Jo Loosemore.
It also includes Robert Newman, Peter March, Mark Hunt, Will Watt, Sapphire Baker and Rachel Saturley.
A spokesman for Bijou added: "We are delighted to welcome John Miles as director. His reputation goes before him.
"It is always good to introduce fresh eyes on to the directorial front, especially when they introduce young and exciting actors.
"This promises to be a really lively, fun start, to 2010. Just the thing to dispel the winter blues."
