A health and safety investigation has been launched after a man died at a Devon landfill site in what police believe was an industrial accident.

The 30-year-old, named unofficially as Ben Sewell, is said to have been found dead by colleagues beside a dumper truck at a recycling centre near Dartmouth.

Officials yesterday visited the site, at Dittisham, in an attempt to piece together the details of the incident, which happened on Friday.

Devon and Cornwall police confirmed that they received a call from the Dittisham Recycling Centre shortly after 1pm. A spokesman said the man, who was from Dartmouth, was thought to have fallen from the vehicle and later died at the scene.

The coroner's office at Torbay confirmed it had been notified of the incident and the name, though no formal identification has so far taken place.

A spokesman added that the man's family had been notified and an inquest was expected to be opened today.

A Health and Safety Executive spokesman said it was investigating the incident with police.

"An HSE inspector has been to the site this morning to begin inquiries," he said.
