A MAN allegedly seen chasing another down a Torquay street with a meat cleaver is being sought by police.

Police say the weapon with a six-inch blade was held against the neck of a man in the car park of a bed and breakfast hotel in Bampfylde Road, off Avenue Road.

It is also thought the victim did not know the attacker.

A police spokesman said: "We had a report from a member of the public who said he saw a man being chased into the bed and breakfast hotel car park with a meat cleaver.

"The man with the knife is still being sought.

"We were called by a witness who said he saw a knife with a 5ins to 6ins blade being held against the other man's neck."

The spokesman added: "A named suspect from Newton Abbot is being sought. He was a stranger to the victim.

"The offender grabbed hold of the victim's jacket and threatened him. The witness saw a knife concealed under the attacker's top.

"The victim managed to free himself and ran off. It was an unprovoked attack.

"He was seen heading in the Avenue Road direction towards the petrol station.

"The victim ran to a phone box to call for help."

The police helicopter was used in the search on Sunday at just after 2pm.

Police inquiries into the incident are ongoing.

The attacker is described as 6ft tall, with a bald head. He was wearing a white T-shirt.

Police are asking for anybody with information to contact them by ringing the 101 non-emergency phone number and quoting crime number FT/12/4380.
