Man on rape charge acquitted
A MAN accused of raping an elderly woman from South Devon has been acquitted.
The jury at Exeter Crown Court unanimously found George Northam not guilty.
The prosecution said the 29 year old of New Bridge Street, Exeter, had raped the woman last year.
Northam, who denied the charge, said the woman had 'dreamt it up' and must have become confused because she had a poor memory.
The court heard the woman had not wanted to involve police and told someone in conversation nearly a fortnight later.
Northam, giving evidence, said the woman had imagined the sex attack.
After the verdict, Recorder Sarah Munro QC, said: "All right, Mr Northam, you're free to go. It's all over."
