Masons support Bay hospice

ROWCROFT hospice has thanked Paignton Masons for a £1,000 donation.

The Miles Coverdale Lodge donated the money after a meeting at the temple in Courtland Road, Paignton.

The principal guests in the Temple were chairman Sue Newman and trustee Chris Hicks from Rowcroft Hospice.

They gave a presentation on the work of the hospice which supports people with progressive, life-limiting conditions across South Devon and last year cared for more than 1,800 local people.

Master W. Bro. Peter Perryman said:"Supporting hospice services will always be a high priority for Freemasons.

"The care provided by Rowcroft is exceptional but they are dependent on continuous financial support to ensure such a dedicated service."

Jill Perryman presented Sue Newman with £1,000 proceeds from the ladies' night and other lodge funds.

Sue Newman said:"Rowcroft has to raise more than £5million every year, of which 70 per cent must come from the public's generosity.

"We are delighted that Miles Coverdale has chosen to support the hospice with this kind donation."

As part of the evening, W. Bro. James Lange, the charity steward, gave a talk on the scope of Masonic charities explaining that the total giving to good works by the Masonic community was the largest private giving in the nation, with only the National Lottery distributing more.

Miles Coverdale has recently supported other local charities including Age Concern Torbay and Friends of Torbay and Paignton Hospitals.
