EMERGENCY services were rushed off their feet over the weekend with a string of assaults reported across the Bay, mostly in Torquay.

Two men, armed with a claw hammer, are being hunted after breaking into a property in the resort's Ellacombe district and assaulting a man in his bedroom.

The 32-year-old victim was able to chase the pair from his home in Victoria Road and wrestle the weapon from them in the early hours of yesterday.

Police and paramedics attended the scene from where the man was taken by ambulance to Torbay Hospital for treatment.

He suffered minor injuries to his head in the incident which happened just after 4am.

A police spokesman said the pair sought for the crime — being treated as aggravated burglary — were both wearing hoodies.

One was said to be tubby and wearing a white and grey hoody with the hood up. He was also wearing blue jeans.

The other man was of medium build, taller and with ginger-type hair. His hoody was white.

The spokesman said the weapon was seized after the victim chased the two men into Ellacombe Park.

Anyone with information should ring police on 08452 777444, quoting log 47 of March 8.

In Ellacombe's Pembroke Road on Saturday, a 19-year-old woman from Kingswear received a head injury in a fight after a row over cigarettes.

A 22-year-old man, known to the woman, is being sought by police.

The woman was taken to Torbay Hospital for treatment at 5am. She suffered swelling to the head and a chipped tooth.

Anyone with information should ring police on 08452 777444, quoting crime FT/10/1578. The crime is being treated as an assault causing actual bodily harm.

The woman is said to have been punched to the floor and then kicked and punched while she was down.

Just an hour before the attack, paramedics were called to Braddons Hill Road West in Torquay where a man slipped and injured his ankle. It was wrongly thought at first that the 19-year-old man was the victim of a hit and run accident.

Later in the same day, at 5.15pm, a man in his early 50s suffered a cut to his forehead and a graze to his right knee after being set upon by a group of boys aged from 10 to 16 at The Gerstons.

Paramedics treated the casualty at the scene. He did not need hospital treatment.

Also on Saturday, a taxi driver was the victim of an alleged attempted robbery at Quaywest in Paignton.

Two men ran away from the scene at just after 2am and, within 12 hours, police had made arrests.

A police spokesman said both men, aged 20 and 18, had been released on bail pending further inquiries until mid April.

In the first few minutes of Sunday, a man was taken to Torbay Hospital after being hurt during an incident at Torquay harbourside. Police say the circumstances of how he came by his injuries remained unclear.

Just under an hour later a 22-year-old man suffered a head injury during a bust-up between two groups in Paignton's Torbay Road.

He suffered a bloody nose and a cut to the hand in the dispute which landed him in Torbay Hospital for treatment.

Half-an-hour later at 1.20am a 20-year-old man from Okehampton was treated for rib injuries after being attacked by a group of men in Babbacombe Road.

A police spokesman said the victim was in the resort for the Young Farmers' conference.

The attack was being treated as a crime of grievous bodily harm.

“reading about the soldier that has recently been killed by a roadside bomb made me feel sad about another loss of a young man, then i read about what has been going on in the bay recently and realise that we have become a bay full of bullies and cowards that have nothing better to do than pick on the elderly, beat up visitors to our bay etc etc. Born and bred in Torquay i have watched it progressively get worse and it is really sad to see such a beautiful place get destroyed by these idiots - bring back national service and instill a bit of discipline back!”

“Ok, i'm sorry but what the hell is going on with torbay these days... The kids doing the crimes are starting even younger now, i think some kids centres should be put up where they can hang out at weekends playing pool or reading books... Doing music ect so they stay off the streets and get into this trouble.. That poor man in his 50's was prob scared to death.. I remember a group of lads around that age ganging up on me to try and rob me when i was 7months pregnant and that scared me so much so i can only imagen how scared he was, though at them being that age you dont like to admit to being scared. The top story of the man who was attacked in his home.. Well get the scum and lock them up for good, cause if given the chance to do it again i bet they would and the ending wont be so lucky!”
