Helen Dobby, head of environmental services with the council, said: "Cashless parking is a very important benefit in the age of the mobile and smartphone.

"We're happy to welcome RingGo to the South Hams since it has proved so worthwhile in West Devon.

"I hope residents and visitors will enjoy the option of an alternative way to pay, especially if you find yourself parked up but with no change to hand. As well as being convenient, paying with RingGo reduces the risk of receiving a parking penalty charge notice.

"If you're running late or simply want a bit longer for your shopping, there's no need to worry - just top up your parking wherever you are by using the service."

Car parks where the service is available are: Dartmouth – Mayors Avenue, Park and Ride, Leisure Centre, Dartmouth Castle; Hope Cove – Inner Hope; Ivybridge – Leonards Road, Glanvilles Mill, Harford Road; Kingsbridge – Quay, Cattle Market, Duncombe Park, Lower Union Road, Fore Street; Modbury – Poundwell Meadow, Poundwell Street; Salcombe – Creek, Shadycombe, North Sands, Whitestrand; Slapton - Memorial, Strete Gate, Torcross, Torcross Village Layby; Totnes –Pavilion, Heath Way, Old Market, Longmarsh, Longmarsh Extension, Steamer Quay, North Street, Heath's Nursery; Bigbury on Sea.

People with an iPhone or an Android handset can use the specially developed iPhone and Android apps to register and pay for parking.

Other smartphone users can pay via the RingGo mobile website, www.myRingGo.co.uk or call the standard rate phone number 020 3046 0010 (shown on signs on the machines) when they want to park.

If you want to save time, you can pre-register in advance at www.myRingGo.co.uk.

“Exeter, Plymouth, Teignbridge, N Devon and now South Hams all use RinGo. I have used this for several years and find it works brilliantly.

Torbay are also looking at 'cashless' payment systems. What is the betting they go for something completely different, more complicated and more costly?”
