Mosedale's Silver Sea catch wins voucher
BRIXHAM Sea Anglers Club members fished on Silver Sea, skippered by Torbay lifeboat coxswain Mark Criddle, in their pollack and coalfish competition.
The weather was perfect for a trip to the mid-channel wrecks, 35 miles from land.
No coalies graced the scales, but a good number of decent pollack were caught, many between 11lb and 16lb.
The winner of the £20 voucher with a fish of 18lb 4oz 12dr was the club's angling chairman Doug Mosedale, while junior Liam Ford's fish reached 11lb 4oz on the club scales.
Brixham's next competition is a while away, on April 4, when spring brings hopefully a run of plaice for competitors for the best fish from the Skerries banks.
April 17 is Brixham SAC's presentation night, when a vast array of trophies, shields, medals and certificates, plus THAT trophy, will be awarded. Come hell or high water, I will be there!
PAIGNTON Sea Anglers Association's next listed competition is on Sunday, fishing from midnight to 7.30pm for best specimen. Weigh-in is at the clubhouse from 7.30pm to 8pm.
The club's annual meeting follows on Monday, February 22, at 8pm.
BABBACOMBE Pier is the venue for Baywater Anglers' social fish and teach-in this evening, from 5.30pm to 9.30pm.
Babbacombe Pier tends to be a bit of an 'old faithful' mark at this time of year, with a chance of whiting and dogfish. There may also be squid so it's probably worth bringing along a jig just in case.
"In regard to terminal rigs, I would stick to simple tackles rather than more sophisticated ones," said Baywater's Martyn Green.
"Personally I will be sticking out a two-hook paternoster on one rod and a running leger on another.
"Bait offers several choices but mackerel or squid is probably just as good as anything else."
Looking further ahead, Martyn will be holding a teach-in and rig-making session next Sunday, February 28 at 3pm. Call him on 07704 602180 for more details.
