New boilers will make Newton Abbot Leisure Centre more eco-friendly
Teignbridge District Council has installed new energy efficient pool heater boilers to make Newton Abbot Leisure Centre even more eco-friendly.
The new gas boilers, used to heat the well-used swimming pool, will save 102.3 tonnes of carbon emissions each year making the leisure centre more energy efficient and cost effective.

It is all part of Teignbridge District Council’s effort to help the environment, save money, reduce its own carbon footprint and still give customers the same high standards of service.
The replacement of the old boilers is just one project the Council has successfully completed as part of its commitment to reducing energy costs and tackling climate change through its recently approved Energy and Carbon Reduction Plan 2012 - 2017.

The Council is one of the smallest districts in the country to have worked in partnership with The Carbon Trust in establishing the five year Energy and Carbon Reduction Plan which tackles direct and indirect carbon emissions across the authority’s property and estates portfolio.
Its overarching aim is to help the Council reduce waste and the reliance on fossil fuels, become more energy efficient, contribute to ongoing cost savings and protect the environment for future generations. It contains 34 individual projects aimed at cutting the Council’s carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2017 and saving up to £881,000.
The new boilers at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre will save £24,307 a year and after six years will have paid for themselves. The work comes after Teignbridge recently fitted new technology low-energy lighting in the sports halls at both Newton Abbot and Dawlish leisure centres.
Cllr Kevin Lake, Teignbridge District Council’s Executive Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services, sits on the Carbon Management Program Board which is responsible for making sure commitments in the plan are fulfilled.
Cllr Lake said:
“These boilers are a long-term investment for the leisure centre and its swimmers. We are all trying to do our bit by reducing our carbon emissions and we hope this will be a good example of the benefits of more efficient ways to use energy.
“It is to the credit of David Wroe, from FMC South West, the firm which installed the boilers, that the work was carried out with the minimum of disruption to all the people who use Newton Abbot Leisure Centre. It was a job very well done.”
Teignbridge has a long history of making positive changes to help reduce the amount of carbon emissions produced by its estates and operations and has made real strides in getting its own house in order while creating a brighter, cleaner and greener future for its residents.
The Council was the first authority in the country to use eco-friendly refuse vehicles and consistently promotes recycling and other eco-friendly measures to its customers, staff and local businesses. In-house measures include communal staff recycling in place of individual bins, with compost produced on-site from staff food waste.
