The service is initially being offered to the 3,000 people who pay for an all inclusive membership but it will rolled out for everyone to use later in the year.

The aim is to build on the high standards of customer service and make the leisure centres more accessible and cost efficient.

Cllr George Gribble, Teignbridge District Council Executive Spokesperson for Communities, Recreation and Leisure, said:

"We want to make it as easy as possible for people to come and enjoy what we have to offer at our fantastic leisure centres and this online booking service will help do just that.

"At the moment people have to phone to book or visit one of the leisure centres in person. For people who have busy lifestyles – whether that is working full time or looking after a family – it can sometimes be difficult to snatch that precious five minutes to do so.

"Lots of people have quick access to a computer with many more now using their phones to pay bills or book an appointment. Booking a leisure centre class is no different and it's really easy to set up.

"Improving the customer experience is key to the continued success of our leisure centres as it responding to the demand for better access to services.

"By offering an online booking service we can help reduce queue times and the number of telephone calls so our customer service and front of house staff have more quality time to help customers if they need it. It also means that the council becomes more cost effective – with resources being put back into the services people really care about."

The software has been supplied by Legend Club Management Systems, an independent UK technology company formed in 2002. Legend provides leisure management software and an extensive range of technical services to leisure operators in the public, private and educational sectors.

Sean Maguire, Managing Director of Legend Club Management Systems, said:

"We are delighted that the Legend solution and services will underpin Teignbridge District Council's residents' experience of using the leisure services available. Our goal as a technology provider is to help both public and private leisure providers deliver the best possible services to their customers, while achieving operational efficiencies at a highly cost effective price."
