TORBAY carers can now access one-to-one support for their health and well-being.

A range of initiatives funded by the Department of Health is proving a success in the Bay, thanks to funding secured by Torbay Care Trust last year.

The funds have enabled the Care Trust to appoint two NHS trainers, who are providing personalised support to carers.

They are helping carers identify what lifestyle changes could be made and what options are available to them.

More than 2,000 people in Torbay are registered as unpaid carers, and they will now get help in areas such as diet and physical activity.

This will help with reducing stress levels, quitting smoking or reducing alcohol consumption.

James Drummond, carers lead officer for Torbay Care Trust, said: "Carers often ignore their own health needs as they focus on the person they look after.

"The responsibility of caring for someone can cause extra stresses, having a serious effect on their physical and emotional health.

"The health trainers will be able to provide one to one support which suits and fits around the needs of the carer as well as the person that they care for."

Last year the trust became one of 24 demonstrator sites across the country to develop and improve the support services available to carers.

This is part of the Government's commitment to implementing a new 10-year national carer's strategy and to personalise the way health and social care is provided.

The NHS trainers are now taking appointments for one to one sessions. For further information call 01803 208840.
