Night-long fight to beat Compton barn fire

FIRE crews fought through the night after a barn caught fire near Compton Castle on Tuesday night.

Six crews from Paignton, Torquay, Brixham, Totnes and Ashburton were called to Shiphay Farm at Compton.

On arrival the 13 metre by eight metre barn was well alight at 11.30pm.

There was some asbestos and four fire crew wore breathing apparatus to fight the fire.

The Environment Agency was informed that 'asbestos minor' was involved and decontamination procedures were implemented.

They used two main jets, one ground monitor and one light portable pump.

Steady progress was made during the night and relief fire crews were sent at 4am.

At 9am fire crews were still damping the smoking grain.

Fire investigation officers were investigating how it started.
