PETE MONAGHAN made a winning start to 2009 multi-terrain season with a convincing win in the Dawlish Coasters Oh My Obelisk race.

The Torbay AC runner finished the hilly and muddy 10-mile route from Dawlish Leisure Centre to the top of Haldon Forest and back in 1-11-55.

It was a splendid time, and Monaghan had more than two minutes to catch his breath before Taunton's Running Forever RC member Richard Palmer crossed the line in second spot.

Teignbridge Trotters made the top five thanks to Ronnie Jones, who clocked 1-16-09, and their third man home – Peter Cleave in 1-21-48 – won the M50 class.

Sandwiched in between them was Chris Cleave, who was 12th overall with a time of 1-19-14.

Fifteen runners from South Devon Athletic Club competed in the race, which also acted as the first of this year's Grand Prix series for the club.

And the results were made all the more interesting after a couple of club runners took a wrong turn, adding damaging extra time to the run.

First home for SDAC was Rob Leeke, who finished 11th overall in 1-19-13 and he was followed closely by James Dent who finished 16th in 1-21-15.

Jean Grierson-Jackson was the club's fastest lady in 1-41-39, ahead of Krissy Taylor in 1-45-08.

Simon Thomson flew the flag for the host club and clocked 1-33-52, while Teign Valley Running Club were represented by William Bell's 1-40-55.

The course incorporated green lanes, forest tracks and country lanes, and there were 229 finishers.
