THE wet sky at night over Torquay was illuminated by a burst of colour as the town said farewell to one of its most popular attractions of the year.

The English Riviera Observation Wheel operators, Mellors Group, paid for the display launched from the Haldon Pier in Torquay Harbour as their thank you for the support they had received from locals and visitors this summer.

John Mellors said: "Apart from the fact the heavens opened just before the fireworks were set off, it was a good display and a good reaction and a great end to a good summer."

The wheel which was beside the Pavilion has relocated to Hyde Park in London for its Christmas festivities but the operators, council and tourism company are hoping it will be back in the Bay next year.

    “5 day old news. Nice.

How about getting out there and reporting on the Police Commissioner election; the most important event in the region this year and so far this newspaper has barely reported on it. The candidates seem to be silently hiding in a cupboard somewhere and press coverage, which really is the only way the electorate is going to get the information it needs to make a considered vote is through the press. Who are being ridiculously quiet.

Walk up to any person in the street, ask them what they know about the candidates for this election. I bet you can't find a single one. And now you can't even report the trivial news on time. Shame on you thisissouthdevon.”
