IT'S still full pelt in the race for the Torbay Sunday League's Division One championship after victories for pace-setters Half Moon, defending champions Applebys and Royal Standard at the weekend.

Artful Dodger are by no means out of it in fourth place, but their 5-3 defeat at home to Applebys has cast them slightly adrift, albeit they've a game or two in hand of the teams above.

Sunday's ding-dong clash at Torquay's King George V Playing Fields saw new striker Russell Williams emerge as the match-winner for Applebys after they had fallen behind to a James Woodmore goal.

Applebys responded when Karl Dooley fired an equaliser, while Williams scored twice either side of half-time to level the scores after Woomore had completed his hat-trick to give the Dodgers a 3-2 interval lead.

Sean Wright replaced Scott Kaazikmae for the last 20 minutes, and it was his pass that led to Dave Worthington flicking the ball home to put Applebys ahead for the first time.

Dodgers responded again, and only a brilliant save by Simon Primmer from Dodgers' Player of the Match, Mike Fieldhouse, kept them in front before Dooley broke clear to score his second in the final minute.

"I really thought we would win with being in front at half-time and kicking downhill in the second, but it wasn't to be. Fieldhouse alone could have finished with five goals but for the brilliance of their goalkeeper," reflected Dodgers manager Shane Finch.

Title Leaders Half Moon were always in control of their game against Victoria Inn at Ashburton's Chuley Road.

It finished 9-4, but was all over bar the shouting at the interval by which time Half Moon had established a 6-1 lead.

Victoria actually equalised at one stage after striker Paul Mills had cancelled out James Horrocks' fifth minute opener, but the floodgates opened after that for Jamie Chamberlain to grab four, Lee Chamberlain two and Luke Barton and goalkeeper Chris Bashford one apiece. Bashford's goal was from the penalty spot after Jamie Chamberlain had been upended in the box.

Victoria Inn's second, third and fourth goals all came from left-winger Jamie Martin to complete a fine hat-trick, albeit for the losing side.

Royal Standard had a struggle on their hands before overcoming Newton Orient 5-1 at Barton Downs.

Indeed, Orient led at one stage through midfielder Paul Simmons after an excellent run from their French-Cameroon player Jules Emati, and it took a brilliant Darren Bastow side-footed goal to level before the interval.

It stayed that way until the hour mark when John Day (3) and Bastow struck to give Standard a comfortable cushion if not a comfortable 90 minutes.

THE quarter-finals of the TSL's Supplementary Cup took up the complete Division Two programme, with The George Inn, Barton Dynamos, Plymouth United and TQ Galaxy all going through to the last four.

League newcomers The George Inn staked their semi-final place by virtue of an 8-1 victory away to Kingsteignton Athletic 3rds.

They travelled in trepidation following a 7-3 defeat at Broadpark in the first game of the season, but this time The George Inn stamped their authority on the game, despite having centre-back Rob Bourne sent off seconds before half-time for a professional foul on Kingsteignton striker Tom Reeves.

Reeves brushed himself down to score from the penalty spot, but that was Kingsteignton's only reply to goals from Dexter Allsworth (2) Jodie Rooney (2) Dean Easton, Joe Crooks and Ashley Welsh, plus an own goal.

Dynamo Barton shrugged off their poor league form (they're bottom of the table without a win) to beat Nova 5-1 at Barton Downs.

Jamie Russell accepted the goalscoring honours with a hat-trick, while the other strikes came from Mark Bailey and Nick Rudge. Nova, 3-0 down at the interval, replied in the second half with a goal from Sean Vale.

Division Two leaders Plymouth United went through to the semi-finals on the back of a 4-1 win against Brixham-based Crown and Anchor, despite a goal from Ben Sharp keeping the game alive at 2-1 until the last 20 minutes.

And TQ Galaxy also went through, beating Spartans 4-3 after leading 4-1 with 15 minutes to go. Justin Lashley and Mike Taylor scored two each for Galaxy, with skipper Rob Redding (2) and Dean Swift hitting back for Spartans.

Swift actually started in goal before swapping places with one of his outfielders and sparking the late Spartans fight-back when Jimmy Lunt hit the crossbar and striker Max Corderoy had two cleared off the Galaxy line in a frenzied last 15 minutes.

"Another five minutes and we would probably have won," claimed Spartans player-manager Sam Rider.

SUNDAY'S RESULTS

Division One: Victoria Inn 4 Half Moon 9, Royal Standard 5 Newton Orient 1, Artful Dodger 3 Applebys 5.

TSL Supplementary Cup (quarter-finals): Kingsteignton Athletic 3rds 1 The George Inn 8, Barton Dynamos 5 Nova 1, Crown & Anchor 1 Plymouth United 4, Spartans 3 TQ Galaxy 4.
